Base64 Encoder

Represent ordinary text as Base64 using its UTF-8 bytes. This is a reversible encoding for data interchange—not encryption, password protection, or a way to conceal information.

How text becomes Base64

The browser converts the entered Unicode text into UTF-8 bytes. Base64 groups the bits from those bytes and maps them to a printable character alphabet. Padding may appear at the end so the encoded length matches the standard grouping. The result is useful in systems that need to carry byte data through text-oriented fields.

Unicode matters: encoding is applied to bytes, not directly to the visual shape of a word. A phrase containing emoji or non-Latin characters can have more UTF-8 bytes than visible symbols. If another system uses a different text encoding or expects raw file bytes, this text encoder may not match its requirements.

Example and common uses

The ASCII phrase Hello becomes SGVsbG8= in standard Base64. Common applications include embedding small data values in text formats or representing bytes in a transport field that expects printable characters. The receiver must know that the field is Base64 and decode it to recover the original bytes.

Base64 is not a security control

Anyone with the Base64 string can decode it; no secret key is required. Do not encode a password, access token, private key, customer record, or other confidential value as a substitute for encryption. Use approved cryptographic protocols and secret-handling systems where privacy is required.

For file data, use a binary-aware workflow. This tool starts with text and produces a representation of that text’s UTF-8 bytes. It does not read a local image or archive file from disk.

Using the encoder carefully

  1. Choose Base64 Encoder in the workspace.
  2. Enter the text value, not a binary dump you do not understand.
  3. Copy the output only when the receiver expects standard Base64.
  4. Test decoding with a harmless sample and compare the recovered text.

Use the Base64 Decoder to reverse the representation. Read more about byte encodings in Encoding is not encryption.

Processing runs in your browser tab. Avoid pasting secrets into devices or browser profiles that have not been approved for them.
